IBS Introduction to Governance

Description

This is the fourth course in the IBS Professional Programme in Business Administration. The governance professional's role is to enforce a compliance framework to safeguard the integrity of the organisation and to promote high standards of ethical behaviour. The course includes a study of the legal framework for business operations in South Africa as well as the politico-legal environment, roles, duties, responsibilities and liability of directors, dealing with fraud, embezzlement, and corruption, professional values, ethics and attitudes for exercising professional judgement and acting in an ethical manner; and Human Rights and compliance issues for business.

Accreditation

The Institute of Business studies (IBS) under the scope of the Global Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA)

Entrance requirement

Grade 10 with English and Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy/Accounting; or equivalent qualification

Duration

This course can be completed in 6 weeks.

Outline

• The legal framework for business operations in the South African context - forms of business ownership identified and the legalities are identified and compared 

• The Labour Relations Act: unfair labour practice; internal policies used to resolve a dispute or grievance, unionisation 

• The Basic Conditions of the Employment Act: concept of employee; status of employee; working hours; overtime; types of leave; termination 

• The Skills Development Act. Skills Development Levies Act: workplace skills plan; learnerships, qualifications, lifelong learning 

• The Occupational Health and Safety Act 

• The Employment Equity Act 

• Politico-legal environment 

• Roles, duties, responsibilities and liability of directors. King Codes. Common Law 

• Dealing with fraud, embezzlement, and corruption 

• Professional values, ethics and attitudes for exercising professional judgement and acting in an ethical manner 

• Human Rights issues for business 

• Compliance issues 

Assessment

You will be required to complete a summative assessment (final exam) at the end of your course. 

Award

This course is a part of a national qualification. At the end of this course you will be awarded a certificate of completion.
